Blum & Poe is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of the German born artist Florian Maier-Aichen.

The exhibition will feature both large and small-scale photographs that explore photography’s evolving relationship with landscape. Maier-Aichen’s latest work addresses the long-standing tradition of landscape photography with a trained eye for criticality; one equipped with techniques aimed at artifice and abstraction. At first glance, photos of the Alps taken from sublime vantage points reference the romantic notion of expedition and discovery of early photography pioneers. But when juxtaposed with images of California landscapes, they in fact symbolize the end to this pioneering spirit and mark the modern day realization that there are no longer any mysteries to uncover.

Other works elaborate on the commodification of landscape, presenting the viewer with a constructed reality where landscape is deliberately enhanced, and nature is embellished to fabricate a more perfect reality. Such photographs consciously intertwine fact with fantasy, causing the viewer to ultimately distrust the image.
