Blum & Poe is pleased to present new works 2004, an exhibition of new paintings, watercolors, drawings and a slide projection by internationally celebrated artist Yoshitomo Nara.
The exhibition will consist of large dish paintings, large paintings on paper, numerous drawings, and a slide show installation of original photographs taken by the artist. Nara's work evokes a universal language of childhood. While his childlike figures appear sweet and innocent at first glance, oftentimes their cold stares, sneering half-smiles, knives and cigarettes reveal a more sinister, complex nature. This show marks Nara's fifth solo exhibition at Blum & Poe, and will feature his first public slide show installation in the U.S.
Nara is currently the subject of "Yoshitomo Nara: Nothing Ever Happens," a major solo museum exhibition organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland. The show will travel domestically to six institutions, culminating at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu in 2005.
