>BTWN x PERFORMANCE<
Thursday, August 8
Lizzi Bougatsos + Kim Gordon x Penny Slinger
doors at 8:30pm / performance at 9pm
Lizzi Bougatsos and Kim Gordon perform sonic improvisation to the projections of artist Penny Slinger's early experimental silent films from 1969. After returning from a Gang Gang Dance Japan tour last winter, Bougatsos found herself emerged in the films of Jane Arden, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Penny Slinger, part of an experimental feminist film series curated by Alison Gingeras and Nicoletta Beyer at the Anthology Film Archives. She began writing text while watching the Slinger films in the theater, and thereafter asked her friend Kim Gordon to perform a sonic reaction. The two artists will improvise to the films teetering on the elemental, surreal, metaphysical, and distinctly feminine raw poetry of the sublime unconscious -- an almost Artaudian parallel for the unconscious leadings of the nature of improvisation in art and life, shared in the three practices of Bougatsos, Gordon, and Slinger.
Lizzi Bougatsos is a visual and performance artist and musician (Gang Gang Dance, I.U.D.) living in New York City. Kim Gordon is a visual artist and musician (Sonic Youth, Body/Head) living in Los Angeles -- a new solo album is forthcoming on Matador Records.
*** In conjunction with the screening of the documentary film Penny Slinger: Out of the Shadows, the untold story of Surrealist artist Penny Slinger and the traumatic events that led to the creation of her renowned 1977 photo-romance, "An Exorcism." >BTWN x PERFORMANCE<
Saturday, August 17
Kandis Williams Presents Eurydice
doors at 7pm / performance at 7:30pm
Kandis Williams, who is based in Los Angeles and Berlin, is known in equal parts for her work in collage and performance. Williams' ongoing Eurydice project confronts the crisis of metaphorical entanglements around the aesthetic and political intersections of loss and inspiration, the "coming into being of artistic gestures" of echo, form, and mimesis as instances of the formal gathering significant agential loss for the black subject. This full performance, stemming from a series of videos, collages, sculptures, and floral arrangements, investigates the relationship between "black identity" and "mainstream culture." The Greek myth of Eurydice is a vehicle for Williams' inquiry into the subjects of a racialized imagination and its subsequent logics, by staging a structured engagement of blackness and spectacle within a mythic pre-Socratic configuration of the underworld. This installment will follow Orpheus from his loss of Eurydice into the hands of the Maenads. Performance by Kandis Williams featuring movement by Josh Johnson and music by Patrick Belaga, and in dialog with Bracha L. Ettinger.
