Mimi Lauter
Participating in
Prospect.5 New Orleans, LA
Yesterday we said tomorrow
Artistic Directors: Diana Nawi and Naima J. Keith
Mimi Lauter creates paintings and works on paper of widely varying scale, from the intimate to the expansive, with oil paint and soft oil pastels in a saturated, riotous palette. Timeless imagery hints towards the figure, subconscious landscapes, plants and foliage, seas and skies, and the personal and universal. Her drawings nods to a European Modernist history with deep roots in religious and spiritual painting, from Medieval paintings and tapestries to the work of artists like Odilon Redon and Hilma Af Klint. Lauter's presentation for Prospect.5 will open at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University on Saturday, October 23.
In 2012, Lauter was included in the first Los Angeles Biennial Made in L.A. 2012 organized by the Hammer Museum in collaboration with LAXART. Lauter received her BA at the University of California, Los Angeles and her MFA from University of California, Irvine. Her work is represented in the collections of the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Los Angeles, CA; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; and Marciano Art Foundation, Los Angeles, CA.
About Prospect.5 New Orleans
Prospect.5 features an intergenerational group of artists from the United States, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe, and will include both existing and newly commissioned projects presented at museums, cultural spaces, and public sites throughout New Orleans. Yesterday we said tomorrow addresses the social body and the individual, suggesting the deferral of structural and political change. Artists will employ diverse readings, interpretative models, and various forms to create a nuanced interrogation and retelling of history that is attuned to our complex era. Resistance, liberation, and an insistence on existence have taken many forms. This exhibition brings together artists who employ strategies that rely on the embodied, the imagined, the scholarly, the irrational, the felt, the connective, and the firsthand.
Yesterday we said tomorrow will open across the city over the course of three weekends. The initial wave of openings will take place on October 23, the original opening weekend, with exhibitions opening at multiple venues and will include a musical performance. Subsequent openings will take place on October 30 and November 6.
