Apsara DiQuinzio, Suzanne Hudson, and Lindsay Preston Zappas discuss the life and work of the artist Harvey Quaytman. This event was presented alongside the exhibition of Harvey Quaytman's work on view at Blum & Poe, Los Angeles from November 9, 2019 – January 11, 2020.
Apsara DiQuinzio is curator of modern and contemporary art and Phyllis C. Wattis MATRIX Curator at the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). In addition to overseeing the MATRIX program, BAMPFA's signature program for contemporary art, she is the organizing curator of numerous major exhibitions and catalogues, including Charles Howard: A Margin of Chaos, Six Lines of Flight: Shifting Geographies in Contemporary Art, and The Air We Breathe: Artists and Poets Reflect on Marriage Equality.
Suzanne Hudson (PhD, Princeton University) is Associate Professor of Art History and Fine Arts at the University of Southern California. She writes on modern and contemporary art, with an emphasis on abstraction, painting, art pedagogy and American philosophy. A longtime contributor to Artforum, she is the author of books including Robert Ryman: Used Paint, Agnes Martin: Night Sea, and Mary Weatherford; Contemporary Painting is forthcoming next year as part of the World of Art series for Thames & Hudson.
Lindsay Preston Zappas is an L.A.-based artist, writer, and the founder and editor-in-chief of Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles (Carla). She is also an arts correspondent for KCRW, where she does regular on-air segments and produces a weekly newsletter called Art Insider. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2013. She has contributed texts to Flash Art, ArtReview, SFAQ, Artsy, Art21, and others. Recent solo exhibitions include the Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art, Buffalo, NY, Ochi Projects, Los Angeles, CA, and City Limits, Oakland, CA, and Zappas recently curated the exhibition Undertones: Biomorphic Art in Los Angeles at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's University Art Gallery.
