Working with textile installation, ceramics, and video, Mexican artist Pia Camil highlights the shortcomings of consumerism and globalization through works that are playful, interactive, and participatory.
The gallery space will be theatrically divided by a large curtain constructed from T-shirts that were originally manufactured in Latin America for export and then illicitly sold back to Mexico for resale in street markets. Camil will be presenting new commissions including a usable hammock sewn from discarded jeans, and creating intimate and social spaces within the gallery.
The exhibition also features Camil's ceramic masks, inspired by jewelry display busts and Carl Jung's concept of persona -- one's public mask or public image -- along with a new video produced in collaboration with writer Gabriela Jauregui.
