Sonia Gomes
sinfonia das cores
Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil
Sonia Gomes: sinfonia das cores is an installation of 34 elements suspended at different heights, creating a symphony of shapes and visualities. The objects are created through a process of weaving, knitting, or otherwise knotting independent threads together into one unit. Along with the layers of fabrics, trimmings, and techniques—weaving, embroidery, sewing—memories merge: dresses, curtains, towels and other various fabrics that people send to Gomes’s studio are transformed into abstract bodies by the artist's hands.
sinfonia das cores was created for the Octógono Arte Contemporânea Project at Pinacoteca Luz. The elements can be appreciated from different points of view—various iterations of the objects are perceived through movement within the space. A soundtrack, featuring guitarist Plínio Fernandes performing Prelude No. 4 for guitar by Heitor Villa-Lobos, complements the experience.
