Mark Grotjahn: 50 Kitchens
This catalog documents the installation of Mark Grotjahn’s 50 Kitchens as it was seen at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, May 20–August 19th, 2018. Fifty-five individual drawings, created over the span of five years, all in the same size and format comprise this singular work of art. Each of the drawings is done in Grotjahn’s signature “butterfly” style, composed of a unique combination of alternating, radiating bands of color, executed in color pencil on paper. Through the use of a compositional style that has been quintessential to Grotjahn’s work since 2001, 50 Kitchens embodies a culmination of his ongoing attention to a formal practice combined with a keen awareness of how this work can be displayed and behave in time and space. This full size catalog includes individual images of the drawings as well as installation views and an accompanying essay by LACMA director Michael Govan. 50 Kitchens was published as a companion to a small accordion-bound catalog by the same name that is sold separately.
